For most local boys, serving national
service (NS) is a rite of passage
drilled into their psyche from a tender age.Indian twins Corporals Raman and
Lakshmanan Ayyakkunna did not have that
kind of mental preparation. They jumped
right into their NS not knowing what it
was all about.
On top of that, they had never seen a
National Day Parade (NDP)... even on
television.The twins, who turn 21 in
October, got their PR with their father
in 2006, but grew up mostly in India
with their mother.Their father is a chef in a local
Indian restaurant and has been here for

The phenomenon has seen almost six times
as many twins born than the global
average in the remote village of Kodinhi,
in Kerala. In 2008 alone 15 pairs of
twins were born in the village out of
300 healthy deliveries and this year is
expected to top that number. In the last
five years alone up to 60 pairs of twins
have been born, with the rate of twins
increasing year-on-year.Local doctor and
twin enthusiast Dr Krishnan Sribiju has
been studying the medical marvel of Kodinhi for the past two years.

odds - not once, but
twice.
Seven years after having one
black twin and one white twin, the
27-year-old mother has given birth to a
second set of twins with different
coloured skin at odds of one in 500,000.
HOUSTON: As the cake candles flickered,
relatives and
friends singing to
seven surviving octuplets on their 10th
birthday Saturday had to pause
and consider after "happy birthday to
..."
They continued, "... dear everyone.
Happy birthday to you!" The five girls
and two boys, part of the world's first
set of octuplets born alive, stood
behind their large, square cake, half
vanilla and half chocolate, and blew out
the candles with gusto, their days as
preemies on respirators far behind them.
