Houston octuplets turn 10 years old

HOUSTON: As the cake candles flickered,
relatives and
friends singing to
seven surviving octuplets on their 10th
birthday Saturday had to pause
and consider after "happy birthday to
..."
They continued, "... dear everyone.
Happy birthday to you!" The five girls
and two boys, part of the world's first
set of octuplets born alive, stood
behind their large, square cake, half
vanilla and half chocolate, and blew out
the candles with gusto, their days as
preemies on respirators far behind them.

THE conjoined heads of twins Trishna and
Krishna will be inflated to the size of
a basketball as doctors prepare to
separate them.
The second-last operation to
separate the Bangladeshi twins, placing
five tissue expanders between the skin
and bone joining their heads, has been
completed. And three weeks short of her
second birthday, Krishna has also begun
babbling and trying to speak for the
first time, after a tracheotomy she had
relied on for breathing was finally
removed.

One of the conjoined
twins separated at London's Great Ormond
Street Hospital has died. Hope Williams
- whose sister Faith is said to have a
50/50 chance of survival - died because
her lungs had failed her, Professor
Agostino Pierro said.Laura Williams, 18,
from Shrewsbury, gave birth to the girls
at another London hospital on 26
November. The twins, who were joined at
the chest and shared a liver but had
separate hearts, were separated on
Tuesday.

A woman said to be 70
years of age has given birth to twins in India's
northern Uttar Pradesh state after taking IVF treatment.
Omkari Panwar has no birth certificate but if her age is
proven it would make her the world's oldest mother. The
twins, a boy and girl both weighing 2lbs, were delivered
one month early by Caesarian section. The couple were so
desperate for a male heir that they spent their life
savings and took out a bank loan for IVF.

A pair of twins who were adopted by separate families as
babies got married without knowing they were brother and
sister, a peer told the House of Lords. A court annulled
the British couple's union after they discovered their
true relationship, Lord Alton said. The peer - who heard
of the case from a judge who was involved - said the
twins felt an "inevitable attraction". He said the case
showed how important it was for children to be able to
find out about their biological parents.
Details of the identities of the twins involved have
been kept secret, but Lord Alton said the pair did not
realise they were related until after their
marriage.'Truth will out'

Cheshire school specializes in Twins

A Cheshire school has 20 sets of twins on its rolls and now specializes
in teaching twins. Four new sets of twins have been enrolled at the
Grange School in Hartford, near Northwich, this month. Ariel Leese-Jones,
whose girls, Athena and Bianca, have just started at the school, said
her daughters felt more comfortable with other twins in the playground.
“They are in the same class and this seems to have worked really well,”
she said. Stephen Bennett, the headmaster, said his staff always treated
pupils as individuals and were not afraid to separate brothers and
sisters if they felt they would benefit. “Form teachers very rarely get
the twins mixed up, but it certainly can happen,” he added.
